| Carey Faughs 2-16 Sarsfields 0-9 |
Carey got off to a perfect start with a well taken goal after 15 seconds by full forward Gerald McAuley. This was followed by two long range points by the impressive Nat Hunter at Mid field. Kevin McKernan pulled one back with Sarsfields first score a point in the 11th minute. Despite a lot of possession Carey missed a lot of chances and had to wait until the 14th minute when Gerald McAuley found the net again from an assist from Paul Devlin. Martin Butler pointed in the 15th minute followed by a Cathal McAuley point left the Paddys with a mountain to climb. With 10 minutes remaining of the first half the score at 2-4 to 0-3 points from Martin McAuley and Martin Butler followed by Sarsfields final score of the half. This was followed by two more Carey points from Martin McAuley and Cathal McAuley for a score of 2-8 to 0-4 at the break. On the restart a Kevin McKernan free gave the Paddys some hope but again the Carey men gained the upper hand with a resolute defence of Fintan McCarry, Peter Murphy and Colm McBride helping out the mid field pairing of Tommy Devlin and Nat Hunter. A 34th minute Ciaran McCaughan point followed by a Martin Butler free punishing some over robust play from the city men with two pointed frees. Mark Rea after a fine run pointed for Sarsfields followed by another point by his brother Ciaran. Entering the final quarter Sarsfields seemed to be gaining the upper hand and further points from Kevin McKernan closed the margin to nine. However Paddys indiscipline was punished by three pointed frees from Martin Butler within five minutes. Carey finished on a high with a 70m free from Nat Hunter followed up by an equally fine point from Tommy Devlin. |
