Carey Faughs 1-14- Gort Na Mona 1-14

28-3-09

We played our first competitive match of the season and a draw was probably a fair result for two evenly matched teams. The city men were first 'out of the blocks' with a couple of early points; it took Carey until the 12th minute to register their first score from a Ciaran Mc Caughan point. With Carey now dominating in midfield they added a second point, when Cathal Mc Auley picked up a Sean Mc Laughlin pass to fire over. A feature of this first half was the high tightness level of both sides, but Carey added to their tally with a further five points from Martin Hunter and two more from Cathal Mc Auley. Des Mc Clelland and Sean Kelly kept the visitors in touch with points, both from play and frees, to leave the half- time score Carey 0-9 to Gort Na mona 0-7. on the restart a long rage Martin Mc Auley extended Carey's lead, but some great goal keeping from Sean Hall in the gorts goal denied Carey on numerous occasions, and despite a couple of martin hunter points, Gort Na Mona went ahead when Mark Ward hammer a loose ball past Chris Butler in the Carey goal to leave his side a point ahead. Despite still dominating the game Carey never seemed to capitalise on this advantage, and allowed the west Belfast men race in to a 5 point lead. However the final ten minutes saw a great team effort by the boys in green, collie smyth started the fight back with a point, followed by another from Martin Hunter, Cathal Mc Auley playing target man up front picked up his forth point of the afternoon, and with time running out a cross from Ciaran Mc Caughan dropped in the Gort Na Mona square, with Carey substitute Rory Mc Bride on hand to flick the ball into the visitors net to give us a share of the spoils.
