| Carey 0-17 Armoy 1-07 |
Old rivalries were renewed once again, in the Intermediate Hurling Championship when the Faughs were paired with near neighbours Armoy. There have been many close tussles between these two teams over the years and this match was eagerly anticipated within both camps. The match was fixed for Glenariffe and the overcast conditions made fluent hurling difficult for all the players.
Armoy were first off the mark when they pointed a 65 in the first minute. Carey replied through Cahal Mc Auley who struck for a point from the edge of the Armoy box. Both teams were fighting tooth and nail for every sliotar and time on the ball was at a premium. Some over-exuberant defending by Armoy lead to Carey adding three points from frees by Martin Mc Auley, in as many minutes. In the 13th minute Armoy struck a hopeful low ball that managed to evade the attentions of the Carey keeper and into the back of the nets. This seemed to give Armoy a boost in confidence, but this proved to be short-lived, as Carey responded valiantly by going on a scoring streak with points from Hunter, Mc Bride, Mc Auley and Mc Laughlin. As the half-time whistle sounded Carey went in with an eight point advantage and Armoy were left with a significant mountain to climb in the second half.
As the second half began, Armoy showed they weren't finished yet, and opened the scoring with a well taken point from 25 yards out. They appeared to have the advantage of the wind, and soon started to put the Carey defence under tight pressure. However, Carey retained their composure and replied with points from Martin Hunter, and Cahal Mc Auley, to increase the gap between the teams. Armoy continued to press forward, and only for some poor accuracy would have given Carey reason to worry. They struck a number of scorable wides and seemed to go for goal when perhaps the point would have been more useful. Both teams continued to exchange points as the game progressed with Carey finding it difficult to get quality ball into the danger area. With the game edging to it's conclusion, Armoy won a number of 65's that were dropped into the Carey box, but some resolute defending by the back line ensured the danger passed. As the darkness fell, so did Armoy's Championship hopes for another year. Carey now look forward to the next round meeting with St Paul's and building upon this positive performance.
